deep breathing to defeat stress

When we are stressed out, our mind and emotions and thoughts feel like a whirlwind. Instead of sinking into stressful toxic thoughts, we need to STOP.

Stop and take a deep breath.

Deep breathing helps reset our nervous system. It takes us out of fight and flight mode and into a more peaceful state where were we can sort out our thoughts and make wise decisions. If we do not slow down, we are at risk for making a bad decision or saying something we do not want to say. Take a deep breath and think before you speak or act hastily.

Here is an easy deep breathing exercise that i use:

Step 1: Inhale deeply slowly for 5 seconds through your nose feeling your chest and abdomen expand while keeping your shoulders down. Feel your belly button move outward.

Step 2; Hold for 1 second.

Step 3: Deep out slowly for 5 seconds through your mouth emptying air from your chest, feeling your belly button move inward. Imagine the stress emptying out of your body with the breath.

Step 4: Repeat until you feel the peace of God fill your soul and body. Usually takes 30 seconds (about 7 breaths).

Philippians 4:7 “And the peace of God which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
